To my faithful, lovely dog Rocco: Rest In Peace

February 11th, 2008 by Dom

Hey all,

I know it’s been ages since my last post (as usual) but to be fair, my dog’s been near-death for a month and a half or so.
Well today he died and I would love it if  some people could leave comments on my next post about him which will include pictures etc.

Words can’t describe how sad I feel :’(

Creative adwords adverts spotted

January 20th, 2008 by Dom

Car company Sixt have gotten creative with their adwords ads!

As you can see, they’ve done some clever ASCII art, resulting in (apparently) 40-something percent more clicks than normal. I don’t know why the idea of including ASCII art in adwords ads has never occurred to me! I’ll have to try it out soon!

Thanks [Coolz0r]

P.S.  Sorry for the long gap in posting, I’ve been very busy - but I’ll be posting regularly soon! I promise!

Popular blogger killed in Iraq war - :’(

January 5th, 2008 by Dom

All I want to say is condolences to Andy Olmsted’s friends and family. He wrote a “last post” for his blog just in case he was killed in action and here it is.

The post is long, but it’s a great read and as you can see by the comments - it has driven many of the readers to tears (despite him asking people not to - but it’s only natural…).

Man falls off 47-storey builiding and survives!

January 5th, 2008 by Dom

Last month, a New York window cleaner named Alcides Moreno fell 47 storeys (~150m) from a Skyscraper because of dodgy scaffolding (an enquiry is under way at the moment). Somehow he survived and is now making a gradual recovery in hospital. I can’t imagine how he managed to survive - no doubt if there hadn’t been fast medical attention, he would have died!
It isn’t all sunshine though, complications could easily arise and Alcides wasn’t the only one who fell - his younger brother fell with him and died as soon as he made impact with the ground.

I hope that Alcides manages to get back to normal some day and my condolences are with him and his family for the loss of his brother.

This case just goes to show - Our medical technology is really advancing and even when the odds are severely against you (like when you’re falling from 150m up and on to the ground below) - it doesn’t mean all hope is lost!

Internet Explorer disabled? Just use this simple trick!

January 3rd, 2008 by Dom

Numerous places have been reporting on this “new” trick that has been discovered which allows people to surf the internet even if Internet Explorer is disabled. Here’s how to do it:

1. Open “Calculator” (Start>All Programs>Accessories>Calculator)

2. Click “Help” (Above the “calculator” display)

3. Select “Help Topics” from the drop down list which should have appeared after action 2.

4. A new window should open. Right click somewhere to the left of the minimize, minimize and exit window buttons. Another list should appear.

5. Click “Jump to URL”, enter the URL (eg. http://google.com) and click “ok”.

6. Good job! You should be on google or wherever you wanted to go now!

I’ve done it in layman’s terms for any computer newbies reading this. I hope you all understand it! :)

P.S. I hope you all had a great New Year!

Life begins at 100 - Three great TED videos on the subject of living longer

December 29th, 2007 by Dom

Morgan Webb posted a great video on Christmas Eve on the subject of living longer. It’s a great video and contains clips of the three TED talks so if you don’t want to watch all three fully through, you can just watch her [Morgan’s] video.

You can see the video below, or click here to view the video on WebbAlert - the three TED talks are embedded below her video on her site so you might prefer that method.

I really recommend watching the videos, they show some amazing things - prospects of limb regeneration, anti ageing formulas that work, etc.

I hope you all had a great Christmas!

December 26th, 2007 by Dom

Just wanted to wish you all a (late) merry Christmas and I hope it went well for all of you.
My Christmas was great with (almost) no “hiccups” during that whole day. Hopefully next year will be even better.

I will resume normal blogging again very soon and I can’t wait :-)  Keep reading.

Techcrunch have some Hulu invites to give away! Quick!

December 20th, 2007 by Dom

Here’s the link: http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/12/20/ho-ho-ho-2500-hulu-invites-for-our-readers/

Basically Hulu is one of those “Watch TV shows online” websites… But this one is a little different. It’s been set up by NBC and News Corp so it’s probably legal (like the BBC iPlayer) but it’s limited to those in the US. It looks very promising and I hope you all manage to get in before it’s too late.

And if you’re not in the US, check out OPENhulu.

TED Talk - Arthur Benjamin performing some “mathemagic”

December 20th, 2007 by Dom

All I can say about this is… wow! This is a talk from 2005 by Dr. Arthur Benjamin, recently published on the TED website which basically consists of him asking members of the audience “tell me a number to square” and answering them quickly and correctly. This doesn’t sound too exciting but I thought it was great and very interesting - especially when he does the working out (squaring a 5-digit number) aloud at the end of the video! Enjoy…

Energy tower that could apparently “power 15 earths”!

December 9th, 2007 by Dom

According to Inventor Spot, some Israeli researchers have managed to design an “energy tower” which could become the new renewable source of energy for our planet:

The principle of it is convection. It’s 1000 yards high and 400 in diameter and is ideal for hot, dry places with a nearby source of water. The water is used to cool down the hot air at the top of the tower and the heavier cool air falls, gathering speed as it goes along, until it reaches the bottom of the tower where it powers a turbine. After going through the turbine, the cool; humid air simply goes in to the outside air.

This means that as well as these things having the potential to “supply power for the world’s current energy needs 15-20 times over”, they have the potential to cool the world down (well some of it, anyway!)
